Effluent Reuse for Cape Winelands District Municipality

This investigation looked at the following Municipalities and the different wastewater treatment works that they operate:

Stellenbosch

Drakenstein

Witzenberg

Breede Valley

Breë River/Winelands

The report provided information concerning the current effluent quality, current effluent practices, potential opportunities for effluent re-use, infrastructure required, cost estimates and priorities of identified reuse opportunities.

Graafwater Water Treatment Works

This project entailed the process design, civil design, mechanical and electrical design as well as project management and site supervision for the extensions of the Graafwater water treatment works. Phase II of this project is in progress.

All Saints Wastewater Treatment Works

This project is currently underway and comprises a new wastewater treatment works for the All Saints Hospital, at Ngcobo. The old works was inspected and deemed not suitable for upgrading. We have completed the Preliminary Design Report and are in the process of procuring funds.

The new works will comprise a new inlet works, new reactor, new settling tank, disinfection, new sludge ponds and associated site works.

Tarkwa Mine Wastewater Treatment Works (Ghana)

Goldfields mine group commissioned Water & Wastewater Engineering to conduct a site inspection and propose a solution for the wastewater treatment at their Tarkwa operation in Ghana. The report proposed a new wastewater treatment works for the mine-workers village and the wastewater stream from the CIL-plant. Included in this report, is a design philosophy, cost estimates and proposed program for completion.

A preliminary design was conducted and the project is in the process of being rolled out.

Withoogte Wastewater Treatment Works

Water & Wastewater Engineering very recently completed the upgrading of the wastewater treatment works at Withoogte for the West Coast District Municipality. The old system was replaced with a diffused aeration system. The system was commissioned in July 2007 and a operating very well.

East London

Water & Wastewater Engineering was appointed by Lukhozi Consulting Engineers to roll out five wastewater treatment works near East London. The works are at Balugha, Kidds Beach, Winterstrand, Chintsa Beach Club and Chitsa Gholfing Estate. We are in the various stages of design, tenders and procuring contracts for the above projects.

Gammams Wastewater Treatment Works (Namibia):

This project entailed a report on the dewatering and composting of the waste sludge at Gammams wastewater treatment works. The site inspection was followed by a detailed report with proposals and cost estimates. The recommendations consisted of three solutions:

Minimum Solution                   R 19 187 697-89

Scenario 1                               R 32 163 522-36

Scenario 2                               R 21 988 091-64

The City of Windhoek is currently in the process of rolling out this project.

Piet Retief Water Treatment Works (with KV3)

Process design, civil design, mechanical design and tender documents for the new Piet Retief water treatment plant. We were part of a project team that completed this project. The project management and site supervision was completed by the rest of the project team.

University of Stellenbosch

Pierre Marais is presenting the course on water and wastewater treatment to the final year civil engineering students at the University of Stellenbosch. In conjunction with the University of Stellenbosch Water & Wastewater Engineering host a bi-annual course on water and wastewater treatment, which contributes to the Continued Professional Development points for engineers as prescribed by ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa).
